MIL-DTL-46992E (OS)
withdrawn when the minimum force is applied, the maximum force shall be applied in the same manner
as specified above. Any cotter pin which is withdrawn when the minimum force is applied or is not
withdrawn when the maximum force is applied shall cause the assembly to be classified as defective.
4.4.15 Firing pin release and non-release. The firing pin assembly shall be secured in a fixture. A pull
force shall be applied to the lanyard in the longitudinal direction in conjunction with the fixture which
registers the amount of pull. If the force to release the firing pin is less than the specified minimum, the
assembly shall be classified as defective.
4.4.15.1 Firing pin release in functional test. In conjunction with functioning over temperature range
tests, the force required to release the firing pin shall be recorded on the firing record.
4.4.16 Functioning over temperature range. The cutter shall be mounted in the test fixture, Drawing
8873322. Two reefing lines (1000 pound tensile strength, 5/8 inch, MIL-W-5625) shall be passed
through the hole in the cutter. One end of the reefing lines shall be anchored and a 50-pound load
attached to the free ends of the reefing lines. The lanyard shall then be pulled to release the firing pin. A
ballistic trace which records the force applied to the lanyard to release the firing pin and the delay time
(see 6.6.2) shall be made for each firing.
4.4.16.1 Temperatures. The sample for functioning over the temperature range shall be divided into
three equal groups and temperature conditioned at 65 ± 5 °F, 70 ± 5 °F, and 160 ± 5 °F respectively.
The units shall be tested within 10 minutes after removal from the conditioning chamber. When this time
is exceeded, the sample unit shall be reconditioned for a minimum of 1 hour.
4.4.16.2 Temperature conditioning. Each cutter shall be conditioned for not less than 4 hours nor more
than 24 hours. When reconditioning cutters at -65 °F, all condensation shall be removed from the exterior
surfaces before returning the cutter to the conditioning chamber.
4.4.17 Functioning at high setback. The cutter assembled to the test fixture (Drawing 8873322) shall
be initiated by release of the firing pin. Midway through the delay firing time the specified shock shall be
applied in the direction of the burning of the delay. Observation shall be made for complete functioning
as evidenced by complete severing of the reefing lines. This test is performed at ambient temperature.
5. PACKAGING
5.1 Packaging. For acquisition purposes, the packaging requirements shall be as specified in the
contract or order (see 6.2). When actual packaging of materiel is to be performed by DOD personnel or
in-house contractor personnel, these personnel need to contact the responsible packaging activity to
ascertain packaging requirements. Packaging requirements are maintained by the Inventory Control
Point's packaging activities within the Military Service or Defense Agency, or within the military
service's system commands. Packaging data retrieval is available from the managing Military
Department's or Defense Agency's automated packaging files, CD-ROM products, or by contacting the
responsible packaging activity.
