disintegration of the primer, propellant, or igniter, or derangement of any component (see 4.7.7
and 6.2).
3.6 Functional requirements.
3.6.1 Primer sensitivity. The primer shall fire when drop tested at an energy level of 60
inch-ounces in a sectioned cartridge void of igniter and propellant charge (see 4.7.8.1).
3.6.2 Cartridge performance.
3.6.2.1 Misfires. The cartridge shall not fail to fire.
3.6.2.2 Ballistics. The cartridge when assembled into an acceptable M16 Thruster and fired
at 60 to 70 F, 65 to 75 F, and 195 to 205 F and mounted in a fixture shall develop thrust not
toexceed 550 pounds and complete a stroke ranging from 3.000 inches, minimum, to 3.137 inches,
maximum. Time between initiation of cartridge and completion of stroke shall not be less than 70
milliseconds nor more than 175 milliseconds. Ignition delay time (see 6.5.1) shall not exceed 15
milliseconds.
3.6.2.3 Initiation. The thruster shall be fired by a source delivering an output pressure of
700 + 25, 0 pounds per square inch gage (psig) at the end of 15 feet of aircraft hose, MS28741-4
at 70 ± 5 F.
3.7 Workmanship. Cartridges shall be free of cracks, splits, or other defects which might
prevent proper mating with connecting parts or proper functioning of the device.
3.7.1 Metal defects. All components shall be free from cracks, splits, cold shuts,
inclusions, porosity, or any similar defect.
3.7.2 Burr. No part shall have a burr which might interfere with the assembly or function of
